ShanghaiShe Rises: A Toy Series That Challenges Stereotypes and Celebrates DreamsCharacter Design|Designer Toys|Product DesignA playful yet empowering project showcasing the limitless potential of girls, designed to challenge stereotypes and inspire courage, creativity, and individuality.
Growing up in a culture where expectations for boys and girls are vastly different, I often witnessed how girls were subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) steered towards safer, quieter roles—encouraged to “secure” their future rather than explore it. Boys, on the other hand, were told to take risks, aim higher, and embrace adventure. This imbalance became even more apparent to me during conversations with my own family, where I noticed how differently the future was framed for the boys and girls in my life.
"She Rises" was born from a desire to challenge these deeply rooted stereotypes. It’s a playful yet meaningful collection of designer toys that reimagines what girls can aspire to be—fearless inventors, bold explorers, protectors of justice, and more. Each toy is a small celebration of creativity, individuality, and the endless possibilities that exist for girls when they’re free to dream beyond societal constraints. This project became a way for me to ask: What would happen if girls were told they could do anything?
From Dreams to Designs
To create the characters, I started by interviewing young girls about their aspirations. Their answers—full of creativity and imagination—inspired the designs. The result is a collection of five unique characters, each embodying boldness and individuality:
- Inventor Lando: A curious mind with a love for building and creating.
- Demon Heir Nova: A rebellious spirit who blends mythological elements with modern strength.
- Explorer Yummy: Driven by curiosity, Yummy dives into uncharted territories, from the deep sea to the stars.
- Subway Driver Pipi: A visionary connecting people and places, reshaping what urban mobility can mean.
- Police Hazel: A courageous protector with a strong sense of justice and action.
Each character is designed with exaggerated features—like strong limbs and bold accessories—to convey power, resilience, and creativity. The toys reflect a balance of strength and femininity, inviting girls to see themselves as dynamic and capable.
The Process
Creating this project involved a mix of research, storytelling, and creative experimentation.
- I started by interviewing young girls to understand their dreams and ambitions, which revealed not only their aspirations but also the cultural barriers they face.
- I then explored market trends in collectible toys to ensure the designs would resonate with a young audience while standing out visually.
- The final designs were carefully crafted to combine personality, functionality, and empowerment, with each toy telling its own unique story.
Even the packaging was designed with intention. Each toy comes in a blind box, making the unboxing experience a fun discovery while reflecting the idea that potential is often hidden and waiting to be uncovered. Inside, identity cards and stickers add layers of storytelling, inviting collectors to imagine the world through these characters’ eyes.
Why This Project Matters
"She Rises" isn’t just about toys. It’s about the stories we tell young girls and the possibilities we create for them. It’s a small way of saying: You don’t have to fit into the roles society has assigned to you. You can explore, invent, protect, and lead—whatever feels true to you.
This project was my way of celebrating the endless potential of girls while questioning the structures that still limit them. Through design, I wanted to create something that feels playful yet powerful—a reminder that the world is full of possibilities, and it’s time we encouraged everyone to embrace them, especially girls.
The Final Output
Blind box packaging that adds excitement and encourages interaction.
Supporting materials, including identity cards and stickers, to extend the narrative and deepen the connection with each character.
"She Rises" is a project close to my heart, and I hope it resonates with anyone who believes in breaking stereotypes and creating a future where everyone—regardless of gender—can dream big and achieve even bigger.
